'No Man's Sky' Shows What Algorithms Can And Can't Do


All the shallow gameplay that exists right now, all those seconds spent drilling into giant rocks with lasers and not having enough room to carry things, wouldn't even matter if I had a companion to do it with.

Best review ever of No Man's Sky. There has been no indication from Hello Games about whether they will pursue this, but I agree, user interaction and content is all this game needs to be truly great.

Nice to see all this data about the game. It was, obviously, a runaway hit of a game, so this is likely the upper-bounds of a successful iOS game launch. I'm sure there are better return on investment stories for games launched on spare-time development, but this is probably a closer look at what a real indie studio can do.

“Shrinking” is an equally accurate and misleading characterization of the console market. It’s the equivalent of saying iPhone is behind Android and iPhone is the most popular phone. The numbers justify both points of view.

Consoles are doing fine, and Wii has lost the casual market to phones and tablets. One doesn’t mean the eventual end of the other.
